Get ready for CDS with Baxter Freight!
The way customs is handled in the UK is changing – but together with our partner, Gerlach, we’ll work closely with you to keep your freight moving through the transition. Gerlach’s the biggest customs facilitator in Europe, and their dedicated expertise means all our customers are well-equipped to jump from CHIEF to CDS in time for the move.
Now is the time to check in on your customs process as HMRC are completely overhauling their system, switching over from CHIEF, which has been operating for over thirty years, to a fully digital system, CDS (Customs Declaration Service). The Directors General for Borders and Trade at HMRC, says, “CDS is a key part of the government’s plans for a world-leading fully digitised border that will help UK businesses to trade and to prosper.” |
CHIEF is a legacy system that was set up to handle paperwork in a world before Brexit. It was never created to handle fully digitised processes, and the aim of CDS is for a more efficient customs process.
CDS is live now, so if you’re still currently working with CHIEF, it’s time to get prepared for the changes. This could take a few weeks to set up so it’s important you get the ball rolling as soon as possible!
- 30 September 2022: CHIEF will no longer manage import declarations (into the UK)
- 31 March 2023: CHIEF will no longer manage export declarations (out of the UK)
CDS requires more information than CHIEF, but these 5 key steps will help you through a smooth transition to CDS:
- Register your business on Government Gateway
- Register for CDS
- Check you have all your numbers (GB EORI, UTR, VAT)
- Choose your payment method (if you’re using a deferment account, make sure you click to allow us to be your customs agent)
- Register for a Customs Comprehensive Guarantee number – this is required if you transport goods more than 3 times a year or if HMRC has told you to get one. It’s an agreement to pay for customs debt that has/will occur. If it’s not paid on import or export, a guarantee is required and becomes accountable.
Our Customs Manager, Chris Roome says: “We saw great success in supporting our customers through Brexit, and these changes are small compared to the very busy few years we’ve experienced. The more our customers prepare in advance the better, to help keep freight moving faster and more efficiently.” |
