Bringing new life to old things

Grace Reddish

Putting sustainability at the forefront of our infrastructure

Spring is all about new life – but as we look to more sustainable approaches in our daily lives, how does this impact the buildings around us?

From the 1930s to 1980s, Battersea Power Station was supplying electricity to some of London’s most famous landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace – at its peak it was supplying a fifth of London’s power!

By 1983, the historic building closed and ceased generating electricity. It’s not until 40 years later that decades of disuse came to an end, transforming into a new hub of restaurants, shops and homes.

Impacting future generations

Through transforming and preserving historic buildings, it has a direct impact on our culture, environment, economy, and education.

Environmentally, restoring a building is much more eco-friendly than creating a new one. There isn’t the need for either creating or wasting new materials, and there is also the opportunity to make the building more energy efficient.

There is also the opportunity to connect us to the past. The physical reminders of what came before us help produce a sense of culture.

Preserving historic buildings can also boost the economy through tourism and the creation of new jobs.

Commitment to protection

The updated Battersea Power Station is committed to “creating a place that embraces our heritage, engages with our present and protects our future.”

The power station is also planning to become operational again – sustainable energy will be created for both its needs, and local surrounding communities. There is also a real emphasis on protecting and encouraging local wildlife; part of the new restoration of Battersea includes permanent bird nest sites in one of the wash towers!

How we help

We work with Sika, a construction brand who provide sustainable solutions in the building and manufacturing industries. One of our projects with Sika included renovating Battersea Power Station.

By working with businesses who share the same environmental ethos, the impact it has can be felt far and wide by many.

We’re committed to raising knowledge about sustainability in the logistics sector, check out our Sustainable Freight Network for more information!
