Living Wage Week

Grace Reddish
This year, with prices rising at their highest rate in decades, it’s more important than ever to be aware of our finances. Recognising the significance of events like Living Wage Week can help us understand what can be done in the workplace and open up the conversation about money.

WHAT IS IT?

The Real Living Wage is independently calculated based on what employees and their families need to live and is higher than the government’s minimum wage. We’re proud to be one of 11,000 businesses in the UK to be paying our employees the Real Living Wage, this is a voluntary commitment we make, to ensure our team will always meet the cost of living. Living Wage Week is used to spread awareness on salaries, to help people get the pay they deserve. This year’s theme of ‘More important than ever’ highlights that over 4.8 million workers earn below the Real Living Wage.

THE BENEFITS

Since becoming an accredited employer in 2021, we’ve been able to see first-hand the benefits it has had. All our employees, including agency staff, have seen the impact of this with their wages reflecting our commitment to fair pay.
Nick Gretton, Finance Director, together with Margaret Ryan, Administration Manager, implemented the living wage accreditation here at Baxter Freight. Not only was it important to be accredited to recognise the hard work of our employees, but also stand out within the industry.
“Whilst we’ve always tried to pay people competitive market rates, it’s important in these difficult times that every member of our team receive enough to live on. Living Wage accreditation is one of several steps we have taken as a company to ensure we will have a stable and committed workforce; this in turn helps our business to thrive and succeed.”

– NICK

In the times we are in, it really is ‘more important than ever’ to be raising awareness of issues like these and opening discussions around finances.
